When to use Number + 来 + Measure Word for “About Ten,” “Twenty-Odd”

In this pattern, 来 is not the verb “come.” It sits between a round number and a measure word and makes the number approximate: 二十来个学生 (about twenty students), 三十来岁 (around thirty years old), 一百来块 (a hundred-odd yuan). The number is usually a whole ten, hundred or thousand: 十, 二十, 五十, 一百, 一千. The exact amount may be a little more or a little less.

  • Use 来 with round numbers like 十, 二十, 一百; don’t say 三来个 or 二十三来个.
  • Don’t use 来 and 左右 together: say 二十来个 or 二十个左右.
