从...来看 for “Judging from …”

Use 从……来看 (or 从……看来) to name the evidence or point of view behind a judgment, as in 从这件事来看，他是个很负责的人.

从 opens the frame, the middle names what you are judging from, and 来看 or 看来 closes it. A conclusion or opinion must follow.

从这件事来看，他是个很负责的人。

When to use 从...来看 for “Judging from …”

从……来看 means “judging from …” or “looking at it from …”. Put the evidence or the point of view between 从 and 来看, add a comma, and then give your conclusion: 从这件事来看，他是个很负责的人 “Judging from this, he’s a very responsible person.” The middle part is a noun phrase: something you can see or know (这件事, 考试成绩, 天气预报, 他的表现) or a point of view (学生的角度, 家长的角度). 从……看来 means the same and is used the same way, and in shorter, more written sentences you may also see just 从……看.

从考试成绩来看，大家这学期都有了很大的提高。

Judging from the exam results, everyone has improved a lot this term.

从学生的角度来看，周末的作业有点儿多。

From the students’ point of view, there is a bit too much weekend homework.

从天气预报来看，明天可能会下雨。

Judging from the weather forecast, it may rain tomorrow.

从他的表情看来，他已经知道结果了。

Judging from his expression, he already knows the result.

आम गलतियाँ

  • Open the frame with 从, not 对: 从这件事来看 is right, 对这件事来看 is wrong (对 goes with 来说).
  • Don’t stop after the frame: 从成绩来看 must be followed by a judgment, such as 他进步了.
  • Sentence-initial 看来 (“it seems”) has no 从; 从……看来 always names the evidence in the middle.
