Left and Right with 左 and 右

Say where things are with 左边 and 右边, give directions with 往左 and 往右, and name the left or right hand with 左手 and 右手.

When to use Left and Right with 左 and 右

To say where something is, use 左边 “left side” or 右边 “right side” (左面 and 右面 mean the same). The reference point comes first: 学校左边 or 学校的左边 means “to the left of the school”, and 我右边 means “on my right”. After 在 you need the full word: 在左边, not 在左. A bare 左 or 右 is used in fixed spots, such as after 往 or before a body part.

洗手间在右边。

The restroom is on the right.

左边这个是我的。

The one on the left is mine.

往左走五分钟就到了。

Go left and you’ll be there in five minutes.

आम गलतियाँ

  • Say 书在左边, not 书在左: after 在, use the full word 左边 or 右边.
  • 学校左边 means “to the left of the school”, but 左边的学校 means “the school on the left”; put the reference point first.
  • Say 往右走 for “go right”, not 走右: the direction with 往 goes before the verb.
