When to use Mood Adverbs 恰好, 倒是 and 总算

These adverbs add the speaker’s feeling and go before the verb or adjective. 恰好 means “exactly, as it happens”: a lucky coincidence or an exact amount. 倒是 marks something that goes against what you would expect from the first part (他很瘦,力气倒是很大). 总算 means “finally, at last” with a sense of relief after waiting or effort.

我正想给你打电话,你恰好来了。

I was just about to call you, and you happened to show up.

这里恰好有十个座位,一人一个。

There are exactly ten seats here, one for each person.

他看起来很瘦,力气倒是很大。

He looks thin, but he’s actually very strong.

这件衣服好看倒是好看,就是太贵了。

This top looks nice, sure, but it’s too expensive.

आम गलतियाँ

  • For “these shoes fit just right” say 这双鞋正好, not 这双鞋恰好: 恰好 normally needs a verb or number after it.
  • 倒是 needs a real contrast: 这家店不大,菜倒是很好吃 works, but 这家店很有名,菜倒是很好吃 sounds odd because nothing is unexpected.
  • 总算 is for something you hoped for: 雨总算停了 is natural, but 他总算迟到了 is wrong for an unwelcome event.
