A着A着 for “While Doing…, Suddenly…”
Use A着A着, as in 走着走着 and 说着说着, to say that something unexpected happened while an action was going on.
文型
verb + 着 + same verb + 着，(就 / 突然) + what happened
A着A着 sets the scene, and the next clause brings the surprise: 看着看着就睡着了 “fell asleep while watching”.
他看着看着就睡着了。
When to use A着A着 for “While Doing…, Suddenly…”
Repeat a one-syllable verb with 着 after each: 走着走着, 说着说着, 看着看着. The chunk means “while (someone) kept on doing A”, and it must be followed by a second clause saying what happened without warning or planning: 他看着看着就睡着了. The second clause often starts with 就 or 突然.
她说着说着，突然哭了起来。
As she was talking, she burst into tears.
走着走着，天黑了。
We walked on, and before long it was dark.
我们聊着聊着，就忘了时间。
We chatted on and lost track of time.
孩子听着听着，笑了起来。
The child listened for a while and then started laughing.
よくある間違い
- Don’t stop after the chunk: 我们走着走着，天黑了 needs the second clause; 我们走着走着。 on its own is incomplete.
- Put 着 after both verbs: 看着看着, not 看着看 or 看了看了.
- For two planned actions at once, use 一边……一边……: 一边吃饭一边看电视, not 吃着吃着看电视.
