放着X不Y for Wasted Chances
Use 放着X不Y to criticize someone for ignoring something good that is right there, like an elevator, a job or a chance.

放着X不Y says “it’s right there and you won’t use it”, always with a note of criticism or regret.

When to use 放着X不Y for Wasted Chances
放着X不Y means “X is right there, but you don’t Y it”. X is something good or convenient that is available (often with 好好的 or 这么好的), and Y is the verb that goes with it: 放着电梯不坐, 放着机会不用. The speaker uses it to criticize or wonder at a choice that wastes X, so a comment (太可惜了) or the worse choice (偏要, 非要…) usually follows.
他放着好好的工作不干，非要自己开店。
He had a perfectly good job and wouldn’t keep it; he insisted on opening his own shop.
放着这么多新衣服不穿，你天天穿这件旧的。
You have all these new clothes and don’t wear them; you wear this old one every day.
放着现成的饭不吃，他偏要出去买。
There’s food ready right here, but he insists on going out to buy some.

よくある間違い
- Use 不, not 没: 放着电梯不坐, not 放着电梯没坐; the pattern judges a choice, not a past fact.
- Don’t drop 着: 放着机会不用, not 放机会不用.
- 放着X不Y criticizes, so don’t use it for a plain fact: to say neutrally that he cycles though he has a car, use 他有车却不开, not 他放着车不开.
