When to use Verb + 一眼 for “Take a Glance”

眼 means “eye,” and as an action measure word it counts looks: verb + 一眼 means “take one look” or “glance.” It goes with verbs of looking such as 看, 望 and 瞧. A personal pronoun object goes before the measure (看了我一眼), while an ordinary noun object usually comes after it (看了一眼手表).

Before leaving, she looked at her watch once more.

よくある間違い

  • 眼 counts glances, not how many times you watched or read something: say 这本书我看了两遍 or 看了两次, not 看了两眼.
  • Put a personal pronoun before the measure: 他看了我一眼 is the normal order.
  • Use 眼 only with verbs of looking (看, 望, 瞧); for listening to or reading something again, count with 遍 or 次.
