口, 回, 遍 and 声 for Counting Actions

Count actions with 口 (a bite or sip), 回 (a time), 遍 (once through, start to finish) and 声 (a call or sound).

文型

verb (+ 了/过) + number + 口 / 回 / 遍 / 声

These words count how many times an action happens: 口 for mouthfuls, 回 for times, 遍 for complete run-throughs, 声 for calls and sounds.

When to use 口, 回, 遍 and 声 for Counting Actions

Verbal measure words count actions instead of things. They come right after the verb (and after 了 or 过): verb + number + measure word. 口 (kǒu) counts mouthfuls, bites or sips: 喝了一口水. 回 (huí) means “time” and is a casual word for 次: 我去过两回. 遍 (biàn) also means “time,” but it stresses doing the whole thing from start to finish: 看了三遍 “watched it three times all the way through.” 声 (shēng) counts calls and sounds made with the voice: 叫了一声 “called out once.”

よくある間違い

  • Do not use 遍 for visits or meetings: 去过两次, not 去过两遍.
  • The count goes after the verb: 看了三遍, not 三遍看了.
  • A pronoun object comes before the count: 叫了他一声, not 叫了一声他.
