When to use Verb + 一通 for “A Round of” Talking or Doing
通, read tòng here, is an action measure word: it goes after a verb and counts one whole round of that action, almost always as 一通. The round is usually long and lively, and often careless or a bit too much: 乱说一通 “talk nonsense for a while”, 抱怨了一通 “complained at length”, 夸了一通 “praised (it) to the skies”, 找了一通 “searched all over”. It is common with verbs of speaking (说, 讲, 夸, 批评, 抱怨) and with busy or messy actions (找, 翻, 忙, 写). The object, if any, usually comes first or is understood: 把弟弟说了一通.
妈妈看到满屋子的玩具,把弟弟说了一通。
When Mum saw toys all over the room, she gave my little brother a good talking-to.
他把这部电影夸了一通,我也想去看看。
He went on and on praising this movie, so I want to see it too.

よくある間違い
- Action 通 is read tòng and is almost always used with 一: 说了一通, not 说了三通.
- 一通 often suggests something careless or too much; for careful work, use 一番: 认真检查了一番, not 认真检查了一通.
- Put 一通 after the verb (and after 了): 夸了一通, not 一通夸了.
