When to use 别 for “Don’t”

别 means “don’t”. Put it right before the verb, with or without 你 / 你们 in front: 别走, 你别担心, 你们别在这儿玩. It is used to tell, ask or advise someone not to do something, so it belongs in commands and requests, not in statements. Add 了 at the end when the person is already doing something, or was planning to, and you want them to stop or change their plan: 别看电视了 (“stop watching TV”), 外面太冷,别出去了 (“don’t go out after all”).

别说话,老师来了。

Don’t talk, the teacher is coming.

外面很冷,你别出去了。

It’s cold outside. Don’t go out after all.

别忘了带作业。

Don’t forget to bring your homework.

别玩手机了,快睡觉吧。

Stop playing on your phone and go to sleep.

흔한 실수

  • Don’t use 不 for a command: 别走 means “don’t go”, while 不走 means “(I) won’t go”.
  • 别…了 means “stop” or “not anymore”; use it for something already happening or planned: 别看电视了.
  • 别 tells someone what not to do; to describe a fact, use 不 or 没: 他没来, not 他别来.
