除了 + item + 以外, ...也/还/都...
Use the rest of the sentence to decide “except” or “besides.”
除了周末以外，我每天都上班。
When to use 除了...以外
除了...以外 sets an item outside the main frame. Words like 都, 也, and 还 tell whether that item is excluded from the set or included as an addition.
除了中文以外，我还学日语。
Besides Chinese, I also study Japanese.
除了价格低，这个产品还很方便。
Besides the low price, this product is also convenient.
除了他以外，其他人都到了。
Except for him, everyone else arrived.
除了工作以外，她还参加志愿活动。
Besides work, she also participates in volunteer activities.
Common traps
- Do not translate 除了 immediately before checking 还/也/都.
- 其他 often helps clarify the remaining set.
- The exception phrase can be long; keep punctuation clear.
