From and Toward with 从 and 往

Use 从 to say where a movement starts or which way it goes through, and 往 to say which direction someone is heading.

문형

从 + place + verb; 往 + direction/place + verb; 从 A 到 B

从 and 往 phrases always come before the verb: 从北京来, 往前走.

一直往前走,就到了。

When to use From and Toward with 从 and 往

往 + a direction or place + verb means “toward”: 往前走 “walk ahead”, 往右看 “look to the right”. 从 + a place + verb marks where the movement starts, “from”: 从上海来. Both phrases go before the verb, not after it as in English “come from Shanghai” (only set forms such as 开往北京 “bound for Beijing” put 往 after the verb). Use 从 A 到 B for “from A to B”.

他是从上海来的。

He came from Shanghai.

往右看,那就是我们学校。

Look to the right, that’s our school.

从这儿到车站要十分钟。

It takes ten minutes from here to the station.

我们从这条路走吧。

Let’s take this road.

흔한 실수

  • Put the 从 phrase before the verb: say 我从北京来, not 我来从北京.
  • For distance, use 离, not 从: say 我家离学校很近, not 我家从学校很近.
  • 往 shows direction only and needs a verb after it: say 往前走, not 走往前.
