When to use 反过来说 and 退一步说 for “Conversely” and “Even If …”
反过来 literally means “turn it over”. As a discourse marker, 反过来 or 反过来说 looks at the idea you just stated from the opposite side, like “conversely” or “the other way round”.
你尊重别人,别人就会尊重你;反过来说,你不尊重别人,别人也不会尊重你。
If you respect others, they will respect you; conversely, if you don’t respect others, they won’t respect you either.

Parents help their children grow; the other way round, children also teach their parents a lot.

We should be able to win this match. Even if we lose, we’ll still learn a lot.
흔한 실수
- 反过来说 restates the same idea from the opposite side; don’t use it just to add a new point.
- 退一步说 lowers your claim, so it usually leads into 就算/即使……也…… or 至少, not a stronger point.
- Don’t mix up 反过来说 with 相反: 相反 means “on the contrary” and corrects an expectation.
