When to use 视...而定 for “Depending On …”
视 is a formal word for 看, 而 links two parts, and 定 means “to decide.” So 视X而定 means “decided by looking at X,” or simply “depending on X.” The pattern usually ends the sentence.
每组的人数视报名情况而定。
The number of people in each group will depend on how many sign up.
具体出发时间视大家的安排而定。
The exact departure time will depend on everyone’s schedules.
能不能参加决赛，要视这次的成绩而定。
Whether you can take part in the final will depend on your results this time.
作业的多少视学习进度而定。
The amount of homework depends on how far the class has got.
흔한 실수
- Keep 而: the set form is 视情况而定, with 而 before 定.
- Put the condition between 视 and 而定; nothing comes after 而定.
- It is formal; in everyday chat, 看情况吧 sounds more natural.
