When to use 要(让)我说 for “If You Ask Me”
要我说 and 要让我说 both mean “if you ask me” or “if it were up to me”. Here 要 is short for 要是 (“if”), and 让 is optional, so 要我说 is literally “if (you let) me say it”. Plain 让我说 without 要 usually just means “let me speak”, so it is not this marker.
要我说,这件事不怪他。
If you ask me, this isn’t his fault.
要让我说,咱们周末去爬山最好。
If it were up to me, going hiking this weekend would be best.
要我说,你最好先跟老师商量一下。
If you ask me, you’d better talk it over with the teacher first.
要我说啊,这个问题其实不难。
If you ask me, this problem isn’t actually hard.
흔한 실수
- Here 要 means “if”, not “want”: 要我说 is short for 要是让我说. Without 要, 让我说 just means “let me speak”.
- Put 要我说 at the start, then a comma and your opinion; don’t put it at the end.
- It sounds direct; to be softer, use 我觉得.
