When to use 颇, 略微, 分外 and 越发: Formal Degree Adverbs

Like 很 and 非常, these adverbs go before an adjective or a feeling verb, but they sound more written and each adds its own shade. Strong degree: 颇 “quite, rather” (颇受欢迎, 颇有道理); 大为 “greatly”, mostly before a change or reaction (大为感动, 大为改善); 分外 “especially, more than usual” for a scene or feeling at a special moment (分外明亮, 分外想念); 尤为 “particularly”, singling one thing out (尤为重要); 万分 “extremely”, with strong feelings (万分感谢, 激动万分); 极度 “to an extreme” (极度紧张); 何等 “how!” in exclamations (何等的耐心); 极力 “with all one’s strength” before an action (极力劝说). Slight degree: 略, 略微 and 稍稍 “slightly”, often with 一点儿/一些 after the adjective (略微大了一点儿), and 微 in short written phrases (天气微凉). Increasing degree: 越发 and 愈加 “all the more”, comparing with an earlier time.

Erros comuns

  • 颇 and 分外 describe a state; don’t put 一点儿 after them: 略微大一点儿 is fine, but not 颇大一点儿.
  • 大为 goes with changes and reactions (大为感动, 大为改善), not with plain qualities: say 尤为重要, not 大为重要.
  • 越发 already means “more and more”; don’t add 越来越 to it.
