In Time or Too Late: 来得及 and 来不及

Use 来得及 to say there is still time to do something, and 来不及 to say it is too late.

Padrão

(还) 来得及 / (已经) 来不及 + verb; plan + 来得及 / 来不及(了)

来得及 means time is still on your side; 来不及 means it has run out.

我早上起晚了,来不及吃早饭。

When to use In Time or Too Late: 来得及 and 来不及

来得及 means “there is still time (to do it)”, and 来不及 means “there isn’t enough time, it’s too late”. Put the action right after them (来不及吃早饭), or put them at the end, after what you plan to do (现在去还来得及). 来得及 pairs naturally with 还 “still”, and 来不及 with 已经……了.

Don’t worry, there’s still time if we leave now.

电影七点开始,现在去已经来不及了。

The movie starts at seven; it’s too late to go now.

We have ten minutes. Is there time to buy a bottle of water?

九点的火车,我们现在走来得及吗?

Our train is at nine. Can we make it if we leave now?

Erros comuns

  • The negative of 来得及 is 来不及: say 来不及了, not 不来得及了.
  • For the past, say 我没来得及吃饭 or 我来不及吃饭, not 我没来不及吃饭: don’t stack two negatives.
  • For a train or bus, use 赶上 / 赶不上: 我没赶上火车, not 我来不及火车. 来不及 needs an action.
