点, 分之, 百分之 and 倍 for Decimals, Fractions, Percentages and Multiples

Say 3.5 as 三点五, 1/3 as 三分之一, 50% as 百分之五十, and “twice as much” with 倍.

Структура

decimal: A点BC; fraction: 分母+分之+分子; percent: 百分之+N; multiple: N+倍

Decimals use 点 and read the digits after it one by one. Fractions and percentages say the bottom number first: 三分之一 (1/3), 百分之五十 (50%). Multiples use 倍: 是……的两倍 = twice as much as.

这次考试，百分之九十的同学都通过了。

When to use 点, 分之, 百分之 and 倍 for Decimals, Fractions, Percentages and Multiples

Decimals: read the whole number, then 点, then each digit separately: 3.5 = 三点五, 0.8 = 零点八, 3.14 = 三点一四. Use 二, not 两, before 点: 2.5 = 二点五. Fractions: say the bottom number first, then 分之, then the top number: 1/3 = 三分之一, 3/4 = 四分之三. Percentages are fractions of a hundred: 50% = 百分之五十, 100% = 百分之百. Multiples use 倍: 今年的学生是去年的两倍 (twice as many as last year).

我跑了三点五公里。

I ran 3.5 kilometers.

三分之一的学生选了中文课。

One third of the students chose the Chinese class.

今年的学生人数是去年的两倍。

This year’s number of students is twice last year’s.

一个小时的四分之一是十五分钟。

A quarter of an hour is fifteen minutes.

Частые ошибки

  • Say the bottom number first: 1/3 is 三分之一, not 一分之三.
  • Read digits after 点 one by one: 3.14 is 三点一四, not 三点十四.
  • 比……多一倍 means double (×2), not triple.
