Location Words with 在

Describe locations with 在 plus places and position words like 左边 and 里面.

Pattern

Subject + 在 + place / place word

Use 在 to say where someone or something is.

地铁站在右边。

When to use Location Words with 在

在 works like a location verb or preposition. It anchors the person or thing to a place: 在学校, 在左边, 在桌子上.

银行在学校的左边。

The bank is on the left of the school.

书在包里面。

The book is inside the bag.

老师在教室里。

The teacher is in the classroom.

车站在前面。

The station is ahead.

Common traps

  • Use 在 for location, not 是.
  • Position words usually come after the reference place.
  • Do not forget 的 between a noun and a position word when needed.
