Most HSK 5 measure words describe a shape or a group: 朵 for flowers, 颗 for small round things, 根 for long thin things, 群 for crowds.

When to use Measure Words 朵, 颗, 根, 群, 架 and More

Like 个 and 本, these words go between a number (or 这, 那, 几) and the noun: 一朵花, 这颗星星. Each one matches a shape: 朵 for flowers and clouds, 颗 for small round things like stars, teeth and sweets, 根 for long thin things like bananas, hair and rope, and 支 for stick-shaped things like pens. 束 counts a bunch tied together (一束花), so one 束 can hold many 朵.

今天晚上能看到很多颗星星。

You can see lots of stars tonight.

他每天早上吃一根香蕉。

He eats a banana every morning.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • Say 一匹马, not 一只马: 只 works for most animals, but horses take 匹.
  • Say 一副眼镜, not 一双眼镜: 双 is for pairs like shoes and chopsticks, while glasses and gloves take 副.
  • Read 一行字 as yī háng zì, not xíng: as a measure word for lines and rows, 行 is háng.
