表扬/批评 + Person + Action for Praising and Criticizing

After 表扬, 批评, 感谢 or 喜欢, name the person and then the action you praise, criticize or thank them for.

รูปแบบประโยค

subject + 表扬/批评/感谢/喜欢 + person + verb phrase

The person after 表扬 or 批评 is also the one who did the action that follows: 老师表扬小明帮助同学 means the teacher praised Xiaoming for helping classmates. Chinese needs no word for “for.”

老师表扬小明主动帮助同学。

When to use 表扬/批评 + Person + Action for Praising and Criticizing

This is a pivot sentence: the middle person plays two roles. In 老师表扬小明帮助同学, 小明 is the one the teacher praises, and also the one who helped classmates. The first verb shows a feeling or judgment (表扬 praise, 批评 criticize, 感谢/谢谢 thank, 喜欢 like), and the verb phrase after the person gives the reason. English adds “for” (praise him for…), but Chinese simply puts the action right after the person: 妈妈批评我不收拾房间.

妈妈批评我不收拾房间。

Mom criticized me for not tidying my room.

我很感谢你帮我找到了钥匙。

I’m very grateful to you for helping me find my keys.

老师批评他上课说话。

The teacher criticized him for talking in class.

校长表扬我们班每天按时到校。

The principal praised our class for arriving at school on time every day.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • Don’t add a word for “for”: say 表扬他帮助同学, not 表扬他为了帮助同学.
  • Keep the person between the two verbs: 批评我不收拾房间, not 批评不收拾房间我.
  • The action after 表扬/批评 is the reason, not an order; for an order use 让 or 叫.
