老是, 通常 and 时常 for “Always,” “Usually” and “Often”

老是 complains that something keeps happening, 通常 states the normal routine, and 时常 means “often” in a slightly written tone.

รูปแบบประโยค

subject + 老是 / 通常 / 时常 + verb phrase

All three describe how often something happens, but they feel different. 老是 means “always, keep on,” usually with annoyance. 通常 means “usually, as a rule” and describes the normal pattern. 时常 means “often, from time to time” and sounds a little written.

他老是迟到,老师很不高兴。

When to use 老是, 通常 and 时常 for “Always,” “Usually” and “Often”

老是, 通常 and 时常 go before the verb phrase, after the subject. 老是 says something happens again and again, and the speaker usually finds it annoying: 他老是迟到. 通常 describes the regular, normal way things are, often in contrast with an exception: 我通常七点起床. 时常 simply means “often” and is a little more written than 常常: 我时常想起小时候的朋友.

我通常七点起床,周末起得晚一点儿。

I usually get up at seven, a bit later at weekends.

长大以后,我时常想起小时候的朋友。

Since growing up, I often think of my childhood friends.

这个月老是下雨,衣服都干不了。

It keeps raining this month, and the clothes won’t dry.

通常情况下,图书馆晚上十点关门。

Normally, the library closes at ten at night.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • 老是 usually sounds like a complaint, so for a neutral or positive habit choose 经常 or 总是 instead.
  • Use 通常 for the normal pattern, not for one single event: don’t say 昨天我通常…
  • Put 老是 and 时常 after the subject and before the verb: 他老是迟到, not 老是他迟到.
