重新 and 再次 for “Start Over” and “Once Again”
Use 重新 when you redo something from the start, and 再次 when the same thing happens one more time.
Muster
重新 + verb (do it over, a new way); 再次 + verb (one more time)
重新 means doing something again from the beginning, usually because the first try was not good or things changed. 再次 means “once again” and sounds a little formal; the action is simply repeated.
这篇作文写得不好,我得重新写一遍。
When to use 重新 and 再次 for “Start Over” and “Once Again”
Both words go before the verb. 重新 means “over again, from scratch”: you start the action again, often in a new or better way, because the first result was wrong or something changed: 我得重新写一遍, 重新开始. 再次 means “once again, one more time.” It just repeats the same action and is common in speeches, notices and polite thanks: 再次感谢大家.
再次感谢大家的帮助!
Thank you all once again for your help!
电脑突然关了,我只好重新开始。
The computer suddenly shut down, so I had to start over.
老师再次提醒我们,明天考试别迟到。
The teacher reminded us once again not to be late for tomorrow’s exam.
请大家重新排好队。
Everyone, please line up again properly.
Häufige Stolperfallen
- 重新 is about starting over, not just repeating: to ask someone to repeat a word you missed, say 请再说一次; 重新说 suggests saying it all over again in a new or corrected way.
- Use 又, not 再, for a repeat that already happened: 他今天又迟到了.
- 再次 sounds formal; with friends, 再 or 又 is more natural.
