When to use Degree Adverbs 十分, 更加, 稍微, 尤其 and 多么

All of these go right before an adjective or verb to say how much. 十分 means “very”, a bit more formal than 很; 更加 means “even more”, compared with before or with something else; 稍微 (or the more formal 稍) means “slightly” and needs a small-amount word after the adjective or verb, such as 一点儿 or 一下. 尤其 means “especially” and picks one item out of a group you have just mentioned, and 多么 + adjective + 啊! makes an exclamation: “how …!”

Häufige Stolperfallen

  • Add a small amount after 稍微: 稍微贵一点儿 or 稍微等一下, not just 稍微贵 or 稍微等.
  • Don’t use 很 or 十分 in a 比 comparison: 他比我更加努力, not 他比我十分努力.
  • 尤其 comes after the general group: 我喜欢水果,尤其是苹果, not 尤其是苹果,我喜欢水果.
