When to use 送给他一本书 for Verb + 给 + Person + Thing

Some verbs mean passing a thing from one person to another. These verbs can take 给 right after them, followed by the person who receives and then the thing: 他送给我一本书 (“he gave me a book as a present”). Common ones are 送给 (give as a gift), 借给 (lend to), 还给 (give back to), 卖给 (sell to), 交给 (hand to) and 教给 (teach to). The verb + 给 work as one unit, so 了 goes after 给: 送给了我.

你能借给我一支笔吗?

Could you lend me a pen?

这本书我明天还给你。

I’ll give this book back to you tomorrow.

哥哥卖给我一辆旧自行车。

My older brother sold me an old bike.

书我已经还给他了。

I’ve already given the book back to him.

Pièges courants

  • Keep the order verb + 给 + person + thing: say 送给他一本书, not 送给一本书他.
  • 了 goes after 给: say 送给了我, not 送了给我.
  • 借给 means “lend to”. To borrow from someone, say 跟 + person + 借: 我跟他借了一本书.
