无论……与否,都…… for “Whether or Not …”

Say that the result stays the same whether something happens or not, the formal way: 无论成功与否,我们都应该认真对待.

Structure

无论 + word / phrase + 与否,(subject +) 都 / 也 + result

与否 means “or not” and goes right after the word it negates: 成功与否 “whether it succeeds or not”. With 无论 in front and 都 in the main clause, it says the result does not depend on it.

无论成功与否,我们都应该认真对待每一次比赛。

When to use 无论……与否,都…… for “Whether or Not …”

与否 is a formal way to say “or not”. It goes after a word, usually a two-syllable verb or adjective: 成功与否 “success or not”, 同意与否 “agree or not”, 满意与否 “satisfied or not”. Put 无论 in front and 都 (or 也) in the main clause, and the sentence says the result is the same either way: 无论成功与否,我们都应该认真对待每一次比赛 “Whether or not we win, we should take every match seriously.” The pattern belongs to written and formal Chinese: notices, speeches, reports.

Pièges courants

  • 与否 goes after the word (成功与否); 是否 goes before it (是否成功). Don’t write 与否成功.
  • Use one of them, not both: 无论是否成功 or 无论成功与否, never 无论是否成功与否.
  • Keep 都 or 也 in the main clause; in everyday speech, use 不管……不…… instead of 与否.
