When to use 偏偏, 好在, 反倒 and 碰巧: Adverbs for Luck and Surprise

These adverbs go before the verb (or at the start of the clause) and show how the speaker feels about what happened. 碰巧 (spoken) and 恰巧 (more written) mean “by chance, it so happened”, for a neutral or happy coincidence. 偏偏 means “of all things, just when you didn’t want it”: the event goes against what someone hoped (偏偏下雨了), or a person stubbornly does the opposite of what others want (他偏偏要去). 好在 means “fortunately”: it adds one good fact that makes a bad situation easier. 竟 is the short written form of 竟然 “surprisingly”. 愣 (colloquial, often 愣是) means someone stubbornly does or refuses something no matter what. 反倒 means “instead, on the contrary”: the result is the opposite of what you would expect, often after 不但没….

雨下得很大,好在学校离家不远,我们很快就到了。

It was raining hard, but luckily school isn’t far from home, so we got there quickly.

我以为他会生气,没想到他不但没生气,反倒笑了。

I thought he would get angry, but instead of getting angry, he laughed.

我去书店买书,碰巧遇到了我的数学老师。

I went to the bookshop and happened to run into my maths teacher.

我正要给你打电话,恰巧你就来了。

I was just about to call you, and just then you arrived.

आम गलतियाँ

  • 偏偏 is not neutral “by chance”: it shows that the event goes against someone’s wishes. For a neutral coincidence, use 碰巧.
  • 反倒 needs an expectation to reverse: 他不但没生气,反倒笑了.
  • 愣 is colloquial and usually appears as 愣是; don’t use it in formal writing.
