When to use 把...送给, 交给, 还给 for “Give Something to Someone”
This 把 sentence has two objects: the thing and the person who gets it. The order is subject + 把 + thing + verb + 给 + person: 我把这本书送给你 “I’ll give this book to you.” The thing after 把 is something specific that both speakers know about (这本书, 作业, 我的自行车). Verbs of passing things on take 给 before the person: 送给 “give as a gift,” 交给 “hand in to,” 还给 “give back to,” 借给 “lend to.” A few verbs take the person directly, without 给, such as 告诉 “tell”: 我把这件事告诉了妈妈. 了 can go after 给 or at the end: 借给了我 / 借给我了.
我把这本书送给你。
I’ll give you this book as a present.
他把自行车借给了我。
He lent me his bike.
我把这件事告诉了妈妈。
I told Mum about this.
你看完了就把书还给图书馆吧。
When you’ve finished it, return the book to the library.
Kesalahan umum
- Put 给 right after the verb and before the person: 送给她, not 送她给.
- The thing after 把 should be specific: 把这本书, 把你的作业; avoid 把一本书 here.
- 告诉 already means “tell (someone)”: 把这件事告诉他, without 给.
