都 and 也 Word Order
Place “all” and “also” naturally in short Chinese sentences.
Pattern
Subject + 都/也 + verb/adjective
Put 都 and 也 before the predicate, not after the noun they translate.
我们都喜欢中文。
When to use 都 and 也 Word Order
都 and 也 usually sit before the verb, adjective, or 是 phrase. Their English translations may appear in different places, but Chinese keeps them in the adverb slot.
他也是学生。
He is also a student.
两个孩子都很高兴。
Both children are happy.
我也想去。
I also want to go.
他们都在学校。
They are all at school.
Common traps
- Do not put 也 at the end because English says “too.”
- 都 refers back to a plural or whole set.
- If both appear, 也 usually comes before 都: 也都.
