Mood Adverbs 干脆 and 明明

Use 干脆 to make a quick “let’s just…” decision and 明明 to point out a clear fact that someone is ignoring.

文型

subject + 干脆 + verb; subject + 明明 + verb, 但是 / 为什么…

干脆 cuts through a problem with a quick decision; 明明 points at a fact someone is ignoring.

你明明看见我了,为什么不打招呼?

語気副詞:干脆、明明の使い方

Both go after the subject and before the verb. 干脆 means “just, simply”: after a frustrating situation, you choose the quick, decisive solution (等太久了,我们干脆走路吧). 明明 means “clearly, obviously”: it stresses a fact that contradicts what someone says or does, so it comes with a contrasting clause, usually after it with 但是, 可是, 却 or 为什么, or before it (你说不知道,可你明明看过).

外卖还没到,我们干脆自己做饭吧。

The takeout still hasn’t come, so let’s just cook for ourselves.

这道题太难了,我干脆不做了。

This question is too hard, so I’m just going to skip it.

明明是你错了,你还不道歉。

It’s obviously your fault, and you still won’t apologize.

他做事很干脆,从来不拖。

He’s decisive and never drags things out.

よくある間違い

  • For a neutral “obviously” with no contradiction, use 显然: 他显然发烧了, not 他明明发烧了 on its own; 明明 needs a contrast such as “but” or “why” around it.
  • When you have no choice, use 只好: 票卖完了,我们只好回家 sounds reluctant, while 干脆 would make it sound like your own decisive choice.
  • Put 干脆 before the verb: 我们干脆走路吧, not 我们走路干脆吧.
