几, 十多个 and 一个多小时 for Approximate Numbers
In statements, 几 means “a few” (几个人, 十几岁); 多 means “and more”, before the measure word after round numbers (二十多个) and after it with splittable units (一个多小时, 三块多).
几 in a statement is a small number you don’t specify. 多 comes before the measure word after 十, 二十, 一百 (二十多个人), but after the measure word for an extra part of one unit (一个多小时).
When to use 几, 十多个 and 一个多小时 for Approximate Numbers
In a question, 几 asks “how many?”, but in a statement it means “a few”, some number under ten: 几个人 (a few people), 十几岁 (in your teens, 11 to 19), 几十个 (a few dozen). 多 after a number means “and a bit more”. Where it goes depends on what is extra. After a round number like 十, 二十 or 一百, put 多 before the measure word: 二十多个学生 (twenty-something students). When the extra is a part of one unit, put 多 after the measure word: 一个多小时 (an hour and a bit), 三块多 (three yuan and some change).
There are a few students in the classroom.
I waited for him for more than an hour.
Apples are a bit over three yuan a jin.
He started learning Chinese in his teens.
- Put 多 in the right place: 二十多个人 and 一个多小时, not 二十个多人 or 一多个小时.
- In a statement, 几 means “a few”, not “how many”: 我买了几本书 means “I bought a few books.”
- 多 goes after a round number like 十, 二十 or 一百, not after a number like 二十五: don’t say 二十五多个人.
