When to use 不是 and 不是我说你 for “No, Wait” and “I Hate to Say It”
In conversation, 不是 often stands alone at the start of a turn, with a pause after it. It doesn’t negate the next word; it works like “No, wait” or “Hang on.” Speakers use it to disagree, to correct a misunderstanding, or to show surprise or mild annoyance at what someone said or did. 你听我说 or a fuller explanation often follows.
不是,你怎么现在才来?电影都开始了。
Hang on, why are you only getting here now? The film has already started.
我们明天,不是,后天去爬山。
We’re going hiking tomorrow, I mean, the day after tomorrow.
不是我说你,你也太粗心了,钥匙又丢了。
I hate to say it, but you’re far too careless. You’ve lost your keys again.
不是我说你,你每天玩游戏玩到半夜,怎么学得好?
Don’t take this the wrong way, but you play games till midnight every day. How can you study well?
흔한 실수
- The opener 不是 needs a pause after it; it doesn’t negate the next word.
- 不是我说你 is always followed by criticism, so don’t use it with a teacher or a boss.
- Keep 我 in 不是我说你; 不是说你 means “I’m not talking about you.”
