When to use 很, 非常, 太, 真 and 有点儿 for “How Much”
These adverbs go right before an adjective (or a feeling verb like 喜欢) to show how strong it is. 很 is the everyday default and often just means “is”: 今天很冷. 非常 is stronger: “very, extremely.” 太 means “too,” and with 了 at the end it can also be an excited “so”: 太好了! 真 means “really” and turns the sentence into an exclamation. 有点儿 (or 有一点儿) means “a bit,” and is mostly used for things you don’t like: 有点儿冷, 有点儿贵.
今天非常热。
It’s extremely hot today.
这件衣服太贵了。
This piece of clothing is too expensive.
今天有点儿冷。
It’s a bit cold today.
明天不上课?太好了!
No class tomorrow? That’s great!
흔한 실수
- 有点儿 goes before the adjective (有点儿贵); 一点儿 goes after it (便宜一点儿).
- 有点儿 sounds like a mild complaint, so avoid 有点儿好 or 有点儿漂亮.
- Before 的 and a noun, use 很 or 非常, not 真: 很好的朋友.
