When to use 索性, 未免, 不免 and 宁愿: Adverbs of Decision and Judgement
These adverbs show how a speaker decides or judges something. 索性 means “might as well, simply”: after things change, you decide to go all the way (来不及了,索性不去了). 未免 makes a mild, polite criticism, “that’s a bit too …”, and is usually followed by 太, 过于 or 有点儿 (未免太多了吧). 不免 says a result is natural and hard to avoid, with no criticism (不免有点儿紧张). 宁愿 and 情愿 mean “would rather”: you accept one choice to avoid another, usually with 也不 or 也要 in the second part. 情愿 also suggests doing something willingly.

Buying so many books at once — isn’t that a bit too many?
