First state something surprising or strong, often with 连……都; then add 更不用说 + the obvious case + 了, meaning “let alone” or “not to mention”.
When to use (连…… 了 for “Let Alone …”
了 means “let alone …” or “not to mention …”. The first clause gives the strong or surprising case, very often with 连……都 (“even …”); the second clause adds the obvious case, which is all the more true: 这个字连老师都不认识,更不用说我们了 “Even the teacher doesn’t know this character, let alone us.” End the second clause with 了. The first clause can also be a plain statement without 连: 坐火车都要十个小时,更不用说骑自行车了 “Even by train it takes ten hours, never mind cycling.”
He works even at weekends, never mind on weekdays.
Even small children can sing this song, let alone adults.
Even by train it takes ten hours, never mind cycling.
It’s cold here even in the daytime, let alone at night.
- Put the surprising case in the first clause and the obvious one after 更不用说, not the other way round.
- 更不用说 always comes in the second clause; to name the obvious case first, use 别说.
