When to use (在)...之余 for “In Spare Time From …” and “Besides Feeling …”
余 means “what is left over,” so 工作之余 is “the time left over from work.” Put a main activity such as 工作, 学习 or 上课 before 之余, and the rest of the sentence says what someone does in their free time. 在 at the front is optional.
工作之余,爸爸喜欢在阳台上种花。
In his spare time from work, Dad likes growing flowers on the balcony.
在忙碌的工作之余,她还学会了做蛋糕。
Outside her busy job, she also learned to make cakes.
学习之余,我们也要注意休息和运动。
Besides studying, we should also make sure to rest and exercise.
高兴之余,她也有点担心下一场比赛。
She was happy, but she was also a bit worried about the next match.
흔한 실수
- Put an activity or a feeling before 之余, not a clock time: say 工作之余, not 八点之余.
- Don’t say 业余之余 or 课余之余; 余 already means “left over.”
- 之余 is formal; in casual speech, say 有空的时候 or 下班以后.
