Структура

Subject + 需要/应该/该/愿意/得 + verb; 不 + 需要/应该/愿意 + verb; 得 → 不用

When to use Modal Verbs 需要, 应该, 该, 愿意 and 得

These modal verbs go right before the main verb and add an attitude to it. 需要 says something is needed (需要休息), 应该 and the shorter, more spoken 该 give advice or say what is right (应该多喝水), 愿意 says someone is willing (愿意帮忙), and 得, read děi, says you have to (我得走了). For the negative, put 不 in front: 不需要, 不应该, 不愿意; but “don’t have to” is 不用, not 不得.

你感冒了,应该多喝水。

You’ve got a cold, you should drink more water.

明天考试,我得好好准备。

I have an exam tomorrow, so I have to prepare properly.

你需要帮忙吗?

Do you need a hand?

他很愿意帮助别人。

He’s very happy to help other people.

Частые ошибки

  • Say 明天不用上班, not 明天不得上班: the negative of 得 (have to) is 不用.
  • 得 meaning “have to” is read děi: 我得走了 is wǒ děi zǒu le, not wǒ de zǒu le.
  • For a simple wish, say 我想吃面条, not 我愿意吃面条: 愿意 means “be willing”, so it sounds like you are agreeing to it.
