When to use 何必, 何尝, 莫非 and 难怪 for Rhetorical Questions and “No Wonder”

These adverbs give a sentence a strong attitude. Four of them come from classical 何 “why, how” and make rhetorical questions that don’t want an answer. 何必 “why must …?” means “there’s no need” (何必这么紧张呢？). 何苦 “why put yourself through this?” is used when someone makes things hard for themselves (这是何苦呢？). 何不 “why not …?” makes a suggestion (何不试试？). 何尝 “when have I ever …?” turns the sentence around: 我何尝不想去？ means “Of course I want to go.” 莫非 “could it be that …?” makes a surprised guess, often with 是. 难怪 and 怪不得 mean “no wonder”: you have just learned the reason (often with 原来), so the strange fact now makes sense.

Частые ошибки

  • 何必, 何苦 and 何尝 make rhetorical questions; they don’t ask for information, so don’t answer them with a reason.
  • 何不 suggests doing something (“why not?”), while 何必 says there is no need to do it.
  • 难怪 and 怪不得 need a reason in the context, often with 原来: 原来…，难怪….
