X也好，Y也罢 and 也罢 for “Whether X or Y” and “Oh Well”

Use X也好，Y也罢 to say that the result is the same whichever case is true, and 也罢 on its own to accept something reluctantly: “oh well, fine”.

X也好，Y也罢，(subject) 都/也/反正 + same result ／ 也罢，…

List two cases (often opposites) with 也好 and 也罢, then say the result doesn’t change. Alone, 也罢 means “oh well, fine”.

你同意也好，不同意也罢，我都要试一试。

When to use X也好，Y也罢 and 也罢 for “Whether X or Y” and “Oh Well”

In X也好，Y也罢 you list two cases, X and Y, usually opposites (同意 / 不同意) or two items of a set (大人 / 孩子). The next clause says the result is the same in every case, so it usually contains 都, 也 or 反正: 你同意也好，不同意也罢，我都要试一试. You can also say X也罢，Y也罢 or X也好，Y也好 with the same meaning. On its own at the start of a sentence, 也罢 shows reluctant acceptance, like “oh well, fine, never mind”: 也罢，既然你不想去，那我就一个人去吧.

下雨也好，晴天也罢，比赛都会照常进行。

Rain or shine, the match will go ahead as normal.

也罢，既然你不想去，那我就一个人去吧。

Oh well, since you don’t want to go, I’ll go by myself.

大人也好，孩子也罢，都喜欢这部动画片。

Adults and children alike love this cartoon.

说也好，不说也罢，反正他早晚会知道。

Whether you tell him or not, he’ll find out sooner or later anyway.

Частые ошибки

  • The result clause usually has 都, 也 or 反正 to show nothing changes: 你去也好，不去也罢，我都去.
  • Keep X and Y parallel: 同意也好，不同意也罢, not 同意也好，明天也罢.
  • Don’t confuse 也罢 with 罢了: 罢了 ends a sentence to mean “that’s all”.
