何 and 怎么着 for Formal and Casual Questions

Use 何 in formal written questions like 何时 and 有何不同, and 怎么着 in casual speech to ask “what’s the plan?” or to show surprise.

รูปแบบประโยค

When to use 何 and 怎么着 for Formal and Casual Questions

何 is the classical word for “what”. In modern Chinese it rarely stands alone; it joins other words to make formal question words: 何时 (when), 何地 / 何处 (where), 何人 (who), 为何 (why), 如何 (how), 有何 (have what), 何在 (where … lies).

问题的原因究竟何在?

Where exactly does the cause of the problem lie?

怎么着,你也想跟我们一起去?

Oh, so you want to come with us too?

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • Don’t use 何 on its own in conversation: say 你要什么, not 你要何.
  • 怎么着 is casual; keep it out of essays and formal notices.
  • Ask opinions with 怎么样, not 怎么着: 这个电影怎么样?
