When to use 索性, 未免, 不免 and 宁愿: Adverbs of Decision and Judgement

These adverbs show how a speaker decides or judges something. 索性 means “might as well, simply”: after things change, you decide to go all the way (来不及了,索性不去了). 未免 makes a mild, polite criticism, “that’s a bit too …”, and is usually followed by 太, 过于 or 有点儿 (未免太多了吧). 不免 says a result is natural and hard to avoid, with no criticism (不免有点儿紧张). 宁愿 and 情愿 mean “would rather”: you accept one choice to avoid another, usually with 也不 or 也要 in the second part. 情愿 also suggests doing something willingly.

你一下子买这么多书,未免太多了吧?

Buying so many books at once — isn’t that a bit too many?

第一次在全校同学面前讲话,他不免有点儿紧张。

Speaking in front of the whole school for the first time, he was understandably a little nervous.

我宁愿走路去学校,也不想挤那么满的公交车。

I’d rather walk to school than squeeze onto such a crowded bus.

反正已经来不及了,我索性等下一班车。

Since I’m too late anyway, I might as well wait for the next bus.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • 未免 makes a mild criticism and usually takes 太, 过于 or 有点儿; 不免 says a result is natural, without criticism.
  • 索性 is a decision made after a situation changes; don’t use it for something planned long ago.
  • 宁愿 and 情愿 usually need a second part with 也不 or 也要 to show what is rejected or wanted.
