When to use 和 and 跟 for “And/With”

和 joins nouns into one phrase. 跟 often joins a person to an action partner, especially in speech.

我跟朋友一起去。

I go with my friend.

我们一起吃饭吧。

Let us eat together.

爸爸和妈妈在家。

Dad and Mom are at home.

她跟老师说话。

She talks with the teacher.

Common traps

  • 和 is not used to connect two full clauses like English “and” can.
  • 跟 plus a person often needs a main action after it.
  • Do not confuse 跟 with 很; the tones and roles differ.
