Ordinal Numbers with 第: 第一, 第二, 第几

Turn any number into “first, second, third” with 第, ask “which one?” with 第几, and know when Chinese shows order without 第.

Muster

第 + number (+ measure word) + noun: 第二个人, 第五课, 第一次

Without 第 you count how many; with 第 you say which one.

这是我第二次来中国。

When to use Ordinal Numbers with 第: 第一, 第二, 第几

Put 第 right before a number to make an ordinal: 第一 “first”, 第二 “second”, 第十 “tenth”. Then add a measure word and noun as usual: 第一个人, 第三本书, or a noun that counts by itself: 第二天, 第五课. Compare 两个人 “two people” with 第二个人 “the second person”: without 第 you count, with 第 you put things in order.

今天我们学第八课。

Today we’re studying Lesson 8.

左边第二个人是我哥哥。

The second person from the left is my older brother.

今天是我第一天上学。

Today is my first day of school.

你是第几次来北京?

How many times have you been to Beijing, counting this one?

Häufige Stolperfallen

  • Say 第二个, not 第两个: after 第 the number 2 is always 二.
  • “The first time” goes before the verb: 我第一次吃饺子, not 我吃饺子第一次.
  • 两本书 is “two books” and 第二本书 is “the second book”; don’t add 第 when you mean how many.
