Put the question word where the answer would go

谁, 什么, 哪里, 多少, and 怎么 stay inside normal word order.

When to use Question Words

Chinese question words replace the missing answer directly. If the answer is a person, use 谁 in the person slot; if the answer is a place, use 哪里 in the place slot.

老师在哪里？

Where is the teacher?

谁是你的朋友？

Who is your friend?

这个多少钱？

How much is this?

你怎么去学校？

How do you go to school?

Common traps

  • Do not add 吗 after a question word.
  • Keep the question word in the answer slot.
  • Use 多少 for amount or price, not for a place.
