When to use Written Connection with 而

而 is a compact written connector. It can link contrast, progression, or purpose depending on the surrounding clauses.

我们不能只重视速度，而忽视质量。

We cannot value only speed while ignoring quality.

问题并未减少，而是变得更复杂。

The problems did not decrease, but became more complex.

学习不是为了考试而学习。

Studying is not studying only for the exam.

相反，他越失败越努力。

Common traps

  • 而 is flexible; interpret it from the two clauses.
