今天这么冷,你多穿点儿。

When to use 这么, 那么, 这样, 那样 and 每

这么 and 那么 go before an adjective to mean “so, this/that much”: 这么热, 那么远. Before a verb, 这么 and 这样 mean “in this way”: 这么写, 这样做. 这样 and 那样 also mean “this/that kind of” before 的 + noun: 这样的天气. Use the 这 words for things here and now, and the 那 words for things far away or that someone else mentioned. 每 “every” is a different word: it goes before a measure word (每个人, 每天), usually with 都 before the verb.

北京那么远,你怎么去?

Beijing is so far away, how will you get there?

这个字这么写。

This character is written like this.

我每天都喝牛奶。

I drink milk every day.

别这样,大家都在看你。

Don’t act like that, everyone’s looking at you.

Häufige Stolperfallen

  • Say 每天, not 每个天: 天 and 年 already work as measure words.
  • Before 的 + noun, use 这样 or 那样: say 这样的人, not 这么的人.
  • Put the 每 phrase before the verb, usually with 都: say 我每天都跑步, not 我跑步每天.
