When to use 别 for “Don’t”
别 means “don’t”. Put it right before the verb, with or without 你 / 你们 in front: 别走, 你别担心, 你们别在这儿玩. It is used to tell, ask or advise someone not to do something, so it belongs in commands and requests, not in statements. Add 了 at the end when the person is already doing something, or was planning to, and you want them to stop or change their plan: 别看电视了 (“stop watching TV”), 外面太冷,别出去了 (“don’t go out after all”).
别说话,老师来了。
