When to use Mood Adverbs 反正, 根本, 绝对, 白, 刚好 and 可
反正 means “anyway, in any case”: whatever the situation, the conclusion stays the same. It often answers a 不管… clause, and it can go before or after the subject: 反正我要去. 根本 means “at all” and is almost always used with a negative (不, 没, or the 不 in 听不懂) to deny something completely: 我根本不认识他 “I don’t know him at all”.
不管你去不去,反正我要去。
Whether you go or not, I’m going anyway.
反正时间还早,我们走路去吧。
It’s still early anyway, so let’s walk there.
这件事我根本没听说过。
I’ve never even heard of this.

Errores frecuentes
- Say 我根本不知道, not 我不根本知道: 根本 goes before the negative, never after it.
- 反正 means “anyway, whatever happens”, not “by the way”: to change the topic, say 对了, not 反正.
- In a warning, say 你可别忘了, not 你可不忘了: emphatic 可 pairs with 别 or 不要 in requests.
