Patrón

向 + direction / place / person + verb

向 points the action in a direction. It comes before the verb, and it says “which way,” not “where you arrive.”

When to use 向 for “Toward” a Direction or Place

向 (xiàng) is a preposition that shows the direction of an action. Put 向 + a direction word (前, 后, 左, 右, 东, 西, 南, 北, 外, 上…), a place, or a person before the verb: 向前走 “walk forward,” 向左转 “turn left,” 向我跑过来 “run over toward me.” The verb is usually a movement or looking verb such as 走, 跑, 转, 飞, 看. 向 tells you which way the action goes; it does not say that you get there. To name where you arrive, use 到 or 去.

一直向前走,就能看到学校。

Keep walking straight ahead and you’ll see the school.

到了路口向左转。

Turn left when you reach the crossing.

小狗向我跑过来了。

The puppy came running toward me.

他站在窗前,向外看。

He stood at the window and looked out.

Errores frecuentes

  • 向 gives the direction, not the arrival point: say 去学校 or 到学校, not just 向学校, when you mean “get to school.”
  • Put 向 + direction before the verb: 向左转, 向前走.
  • Don’t mix up 向 (xiàng, “toward”) with 像 (xiàng, “to look like”) or 想 (xiǎng, “to think”).
