Approximate Numbers with 大约, 左右 and 前后

Give rough numbers and times with 大约 before the number, 左右 after it, and 前后 after a point in time, as in 春节前后.

Structure

大约 + number (+ measure word); number (+ measure word) + 左右; time point + 前后

大约 comes before the number, 左右 after it, and 前后 only after a point in time.

这件衣服三百块左右。

When to use Approximate Numbers with 大约, 左右 and 前后

To give a rough number, put 大约 before the number, or 左右 after the number and its measure word: 大约三百块 or 三百块左右 “about 300 yuan”. 前后 also goes after, but only after a point in time such as a festival, a date or an event: 春节前后 “around Spring Festival”. 左右 works with amounts, lengths of time and clock times, while 前后 never follows an amount.

从我家到学校大约要二十分钟。

It takes about twenty minutes from my home to school.

我每天晚上十一点左右睡觉。

I go to bed around eleven every night.

春节前后，火车票很难买。

Around Spring Festival, train tickets are hard to get.

他看起来四十岁左右。

He looks about forty.

Pièges courants

  • 左右 goes after the number, not before it: 三十个人左右, not 左右三十个人.
  • Don’t use 前后 with an amount or a length of time: 两个小时左右, not 两个小时前后.
  • Use one approximation word, not two: 大约三十个人 or 三十个人左右, not 大约三十个人左右.
